There are several types of outerwear that can be seen with the change of season. Read the article to know about the various types of outerwear available for both men & women.

Clothing was invented by humankind as a necessity to keep them protected from the harsh conditions. The cavemen were known to wear animal skin to protect themselves from the cold and even from the other extremities that the weather brought with it.

With time, humans emerged and they brought new frontiers to the clothing business. They invented clothes, then they invented sophisticated clothing and in the process, they brought about something called outerwear.

What is Outerwear?

Outerwear is a garment worn outside. That is any kind of clothing that we wear over our normal clothing. Previously, outerwear was considered to be something to be worn outside the home.

But with changing times, it has come to mean something that will be worn only over other clothing options. While this quickly brings winter wear to mind, but there are different kinds of outerwear and some can even be worn during the warmer seasons. A quick example would be a denim tee over a camisole or a bra top.

Types of Outerwear

Outerwear, from the times it emerged, has come a long way. There are various types of outerwear available today for both men and women. For men, they have the options of a coat, blazer, and a tuxedo. For women, we have a trench coat, an extra-long vest, and a cardigan.

Let’s see today how they became an integral part of our lives.

1.Blazers

The term blazer was invented in Cambridge in 1825. Blazers are outerwear usually worn on casual occasions. They come from a time when men were more into sports jackets and formal clothing was sidelined. Blazers are made of densely woven fabrics. It often goes with a tie for men.

Women too wear blazers, but they come in very different styles. And for women, they can be worn with dresses too.

2.Cardigans

Did you know that men and women had the same cardigans? It was Coco Channel who first abruptly disliked the tight fit around the head; as it messed up her hair, and went on to make the buttoned ones. Aren’t we women grateful to her forever? Another interesting fact is that the cardigan is named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan a British Military Commander. Way to take your legacy forward! In the beginning, it was a woolen garment worn inside. Later they were made with more sophisticated wool and thus came the cardigan we see today.

3.Jackets

This is a legacy of the middle-class working men of the Renaissance period. They started wearing this fitted garment which was initially called a jerkin. The modern jacket came into being once again with the British, but the navy this time.

The fabric at that point was mostly a combination of wool and acrylic. In India, however, The Nehru Jacket was the one that caught up with fame and has refused to die down ever since. Made from Khadi this jacket was even exported to the Americas and Europe in the 1960s.

However, when it comes to women’s jackets it was the US workforce. Designers like Chanel made their claim to fame with this type of outerwear for women.

The word coat was developed from the French and Latin word “Cottus”. The Dutch military in the 1800s brought about this garment that we call the coat today. It was then made out of coarse wool. The coat was then adopted by the US Navy and made way into the US fashion regime. Back then it was a form-fitting garment designed mainly to keep the winds at bay. In fact, in Britain, there was also a popular garment called the greatcoat in the 1800s, which was used as a garment worn over the suit coats we know today. Women, though, started wearing coats in the 17th Century when they first adopted riding. Women of the 18th Century were interested in shawls imported from India both as an accessory for the indoor and the outdoors.
