Pharmacy opening rules

On week days and Saturdays, pharmacies are usually open between 8h30 and 9:00 am until 7 to 9 pm. Some closes at 10:00 pm or later, midnight, or 2:00 am. A few are open 24 h a day.

Sundays, pharmacies are usually closes except if they are on-call pharmacy (on a rotating basis)

There are about 22 pharmacies open at night or late in the day or the whole night. They are listed below in this post for Paris.
Important note: At unusual pharmacy opening times, always call before you go to the indicated address to make sure they are open.

Dispensing drugs in pharmacies

In France, the dispensing of medicines is highly regulated. Prescription drugs are classified in Liste I and II. They can only be obtained from a pharmacy on presentation of a prescription written by a doctor, dental surgeon or midwife. In addition, the first issue of List I and II drugs is only authorized on presentation of a prescription less than 3 months old (article R. 5132-22 of the CSP). The quantity of medication is limited to one month’s consumption (can be renewed). The duration of the prescribed treatment may not exceed 12 months (article R. 5132-21 of the CSP). After this period a new visit to the physician is required.

It is therefore imperative that tourists suffering from a potentially serious risk disease, keep their doctor’s (original) prescription (with contact details, legal references, etc., so that the doctor can be easily identified as a qualified medical practitioner) with their travel documents. If you’ve forgotten your prescriptions, you’ll need to obtain a prescription from a French doctor.

Medical organization in France

The medical world in France is divided into “General Practitioners” and “Specialists” – plus the Professors of Medicine who work in university hospitals and in their expensive private practices. The official rule is that you must first go to the General Practitioner (or Referring Physician) who decides whether or not to send you to see a Specialist. This rule is not always respected: if you go directly to the Specialist, he or she will ask for the name of your referring doctor to send him or her the report.

But it takes several days to get an appointment with a GP, and often several months for a Specialist. If you’re a tourist in France for just a few days, you’ll have to do things differently to get a medical visit or prescription immediately.

How can I get a prescription quickly, if necessary?

Your hotel porter will certainly be happy to help you. Hotels often know a local doctor, or will arrange for one by calling SOS Médecin.

In addition, the SOS Médecins organization is available 24/7. Doctors come to your home. Their fees are higher than for an ordinary visit, but are reimbursed at the same level by Social Security (for French citizens).

Note that a doctor’s prescription can be obtained also online via the Internet. See Google “get immediate online medical consultation“. The prescription can be obtained after individual assessment of the patient on a teleconsultation platform. Teleconsultation is carried out using a computer, tablet or cell phone. All you need is a microphone, a camera and a broadband Internet connection. Usually, the prescription is sent directly to the pharmacy near you or to the one you choose.

On Sundays, you can always go to the nearest closed pharmacy, where you’ll find a sign near the entrance with the address of the one or 2 on-call pharmacies in the neighborhood. By calling 17 you will reach the Police Station where the pharmacists on duty are also listed.

Eventually, you’ll be given a prescription to enable you to buy the prescribed medication.

In the event of an emergency : number 15 of your phone

In such cases, rapid intervention is often vital. The only solution is not to find a prescription, but to save a live. Only one téléphone number : 15, to contact The Samu service.

You can contact the SAMU (or SAMUR as it’s sometimes called) directly at any time of day or night, by calling 15. A nurse will then ask you questions and direct you to a general practitioner, who will decide what action to take in your case: see a doctor in the next few days if there is no emergency, go yourself immediately to the nearest hospital emergency room (which he or she will tell you about), or send an ambulance (within 15 minutes to 1/2 hour) to take you to the emergency room as well. Except that if you go by yourself, you may have to wait several hours (depending on the overcrowding of the service), whereas patients “by ambulance” are by priority immediately admitted to a doctor.

Note that 18 is the telephone used by the fire department, which provides the same service as 15 for health problems, but also responds to all other everyday problems (fires, etc.). Often the two services, 15 and 18, automatically take turns by calling any of them. But to be directly in touch with a physician it is quicker to use 15

Finally, you can go directly to the emergency department of any hospital with an emergency service (often open 24/7). Ask the Portier of your hotel. After a brief examination on arrival, you’ll have to wait in the waiting room, depending of the urgency of you sickness – often for several hours, in the most critical cases.

How to find a pharmacy in your neighborhood in Paris

Once you have a prescription from a a medical doctor, you can use use the official website of a pharmacist by clicking on MonPharmacien – Ile de France – See below a facsimile of the pharmacy location map

2. Click on date if you need an other date that the date of the day (a calender will open to choose)
3. Click on “Jour” (day) or “Night” (nuit)
4. Click on “Rechercher une Pharmacie” (Find a Pharmacy)

The website Mon Pharmacien (My Pharmacist), allows you to search around the desired location for a pharmacy open during the week and an on-call pharmacy on Sundays and holidays around. You can identify the pharmacy open during the day or the one on call closest to you and easily find the best route to get there.

The above map includes Paris and its inner suburb. In Paris, the on-call pharmacies are open and directly accessible at night. Everywhere else (in the Paris suburb), the coordinates of the pharmacy on duty at night will be communicated to you by the local police or gendarmerie services.

The police or gendarmerie services can also be contacted via the number 17 on your telephone.
Number 15 of your phone is the number specific to medical emergencies (SAMU).
Number 18 is the number that allows you to reach the Fire Department.
Number 114 is for emergencies accessible by appli or SMS
Number 112 is the new European emergency number since January 1, 1997, it is valid throughout the E.E.C. The particularity of this number is that it is not specific: it concerns all emergencies (medical, fire, police…).

In case of emergency

If none of these pharmacies are near your lodging address, or if you can’t find one open (night, Sunday from the above table and map), you can always go to the nearest police station or call number 17 of your phone. You will find help there (list of doctors, pharmacies on duty).

In case of medical emergency (Stroke, infarctus or else), dial number 15. You will automatically be put in touch with an emergency specialist who will ask you about your condition. If necessary, you will be immediately referred to a doctor who will decide what you need to do, and possibly send an ambulance to your address to take you to the nearest hospital.
