This summer has presented the tremendous opportunity to study abroad in Italy at CIMBA. In only my first week, studying abroad has been a transformative experience that will leave an indelible mark on my education. CIMBA has given way to a newfound appreciation for Italian culture and has inspired me to take on deep and meaningful exploration. This first week has begun with unwavering momentum and bolsters my belief that this program is the one for me.As an assignment for my Global Consumer class with Molly Rapert, I will touch upon five key takeaways from my first five days in Italy.1. Branch Out! CIMBA provides opportunities to students from a large group of different universities. This inherent diversity allows me to interact and discuss experiences with students different from those at my home institution. The diversity of students has given me the chance to make lifelong connections and friendships.2. Escape your comfort zone. Opting for a study abroad program is an endeavor that requires you to be willing to leave your bubble. In my short time, I have learned that the only way to engage fully is to leave that proverbial comfort zone. Be open to new experiences, take on risks, and certainly do not have a narrow mindset.3. Patience. Things will not always make sense or go to plan. In my short time, I have missed buses/trains and had luggage issues at the airport. These experiences can be frustrating, so it is crucial to be patient and optimistic.4. Be mindful of local culture. My short time in Italy has taught me that it is not safe to assume American cultural norms are universal. Taking the time to understand and apply local behaviors reflects well. Embracing the culture around you is the best way to gain perspective.5. Keep moving! It can be easy to get homesick or miss your friends and family. It’s taken me only five days to crave Chipotle. My way to suppress those feelings is to explore. I am acutely aware that to gain as much knowledge as possible, I must take advantage of every opportunity presented.I’ve only spent five days in Italy, and I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks have in store. If one thing is for certain, I know I’ll come back with a phone full of memories and a belly full of pasta…#hogsabroad

I STUDIED 5 MONTHS IN ROME, ITALY! 🇮🇹🍝It’s been a couple of weeks now since I landed back to Helsinki-Vantaa from my Erasmus exchange at Roma Tre University in the heart of Rome. Ever since starting my studies it was very clear to me I want to do an exchange abroad - it’s just too great of an opportunity to miss! Although the covid pandemic messed with my timing, I’m happy it eventually worked out during my Master’s studies. This last spring semester proved to be the most exciting, influential, and transformative time, helping me learn not just about new technologies and management frameworks, but also so much about myself, other people, and the world around me in a truly international environment. So, what did I get from the experience…?Besides enjoying what the beautiful city and Italian culture had to offer, I gained new perspectives and confidence in myself and my abilities, got out of my comfort zone and practised problem-solving daily - and trained my English and basics of Italian, of course!I am especially grateful to have met so many lovely people from around the world - will be treasuring all the connections, precious friendships and memories together! After living these past months abroad, international career now seems even more lucrative than before, and I feel excited and curious for the future, whatever it may bring. In a nutshell: Go study/work abroad if you have the opportunity!#studyabroad #newperspectives #internationalcompetence

It was only five days ago that I set foot on the Paderno del Grappa campus that would serve as my temporary home for the next four weeks. I've had the opportunity to take some incredible classes while in Italy thanks to the CIMBA program. Global Consumer with Molly Rapert and International Marketing with Swinder Janda. As my first week in Italy comes to a close I've had one of the most enjoyable, thrilling, and difficult five days while adjusting to a new country. This study abroad program has taught me more life lessons than I can count. I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of this journey has in store, but for the time being, I'll leave you with five lessons I've picked up over the past five days. 1. Cultural Immersion and different global perspectives:Studying in Italy has exposed me to new cultures, languages, traditions and perspectives. Living in a different country has allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture, interact with people from diverse backgrounds and gain a deeper understanding of global issues. As I am sitting here writing this, I am watching local elementary school students eat their lunch outside. Something so simple as watching kids outside has taught me so much. This experience has broadened my horizons and fostered a more inclusive and open-minded worldview. 2. Learn to be patient, there is no need to rush:Life in Italy is much different than life in America. People take their time with everything they do. Whether that be at a restaurant or walking the streets in a town nearby. There is no rush whatsoever. My friends and I have joked that even the dogs walk slower. There is a great sense of calmness and relaxation here in italy. 3. Personal growth and independence:Being in Italy I am very far from familiar environments. This independence has allowed me to develop valuable life skills such as problem solving and adaptability. Being in a new country has pushed me out of my comfort zones. For example, my first time on a train did not go as planned. I quickly learned to adapt and get to where I was supposed to be. 4. Take each and every opportunity given to you.The Cimba program has provided students with an abundance of opportunities. I might be exhausted from the 8 a.m. class or jet lagged, but regardless of how exhausted I am, I keep in mind that I only have one chance to be here and I want to make the most of every opportunity I am given. 5. Be open minded:We examine many topics pertaining to many nations from a global perspective in my Global Consumer class. I have gained knowledge on a variety of subjects relating to China and the changes that have occurred to its society and economy over time. You must be open to viewing things from various cultural and vantage points if you want to properly comprehend these counties.

Last semester, I had the amazing experience of completing a semester abroad! I spent 4 months completing a Minor in Strategy Consulting at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In my minor program, I got the opportunity to consult a local business. My team was able to analyze data on products, sales, prices, and competitors to create a plan for our client to increase their market share and better compete with similar businesses. While abroad, I also took time to travel outside of my host city. During these four months, I traveled to 11 countries across Europe and made friends from all over the world! Since coming back, I have had plenty of time to reflect on what I have learned while abroad. I would love to share a few pieces of advice with everyone considering taking on this adventure!1. It's not as lonely as you might expectEveryone is clueless and scared on the first day of their study abroad program. You are not alone! It was extremely intimidating being the only person from my university to participate in the program. This factor almost stopped me from going, but ended up being a blessing in disguise. I was forced out of my comfort zone and required to make friends from around the world. I got to learn about different cultures and expand my network internationally. 2. Things will go wrongBeing in a different country comes with a long list of challenges, many of which you will not have the answers to. It is extremely hard to be away from your support system. Being abroad will test your communication and problem solving skills to the ultimate degree. There will be low points and times when you feel defeated, but nothing feels better than looking back at these times and knowing that you were able to overcome these obstacles on your own. Going abroad has given me the confidence to know that I am truly capable of anything.3. If you have the opportunity to study abroad, DO ITThis is likely to be the only opportunity you have to live in a different county without completely uprooting your life. It is also likely that you will never again have this many readily available resources to help you with the process. Studying abroad allows you the ability to view the world from a different perspective. To be socially, educationally, and professionally immersed in a new culture is an experience like no other!
